Thelma de Gutierrez has lived and breathed coffee since childhood. A third-generation coffee farmer, she grew up on her family’s farm, where she fondly recalls playing among the coffee trees during harvest season, surrounded by the sweet aroma of ripe cherries. These cherished memories inspired her to continue the family legacy, leading her to purchase Finca Madre Tierra in 2006 and establish herself as a dedicated coffee producer.
In 2014, Thelma expanded her operations by acquiring Finca Lemus Bella Vista, an adjacent plot named in honor of its previous owner, family friend Carlos Lemus. Both farms are nestled atop a hill in the Ilamatepec mountain range, near the renowned coffee-growing town of Ataco—a region celebrated for its high-quality coffee. Thelma intentionally chose this area, drawn by its rich volcanic soil and ideal growing conditions.
Despite the region’s strong reputation, Thelma is constantly working to elevate her farm’s quality. She plans to install an irrigation system to improve efficiency and resilience against challenges like drought, pests, and financial constraints. The farm already benefits from fertile volcanic soil, a year-round natural spring, and lush native shade trees that support local wildlife.
Sustainability is at the heart of Thelma’s approach. She employs eco-friendly farming practices, using a holistic ecological system to combat pests and diseases. By fostering beneficial fungi and insects that naturally protect her coffee trees, she ensures her farm thrives in harmony with the environment.
Through every challenge, Thelma’s dedication never wavers. As she puts it, “My love and passion for coffee is what keeps us going.” That passion is evident in her Pacamara Natural lot, a vibrant coffee bursting with berry notes, black tea, and citrus—a true reflection of her hard work and devotion.
